Well, since there are alternatives, and that's one of them, I'm going to be testing it. Will keep the net advised on the progress of this test. Try that and >see if the SLIP connection is established. You haven't been reading my postings here then. SLIP <DOES> come up from the dialer. It works normally for some period of time from seconds to hours. After that it will start inserting long pauses in service -- it never actually hangs - if you wait long enough, it will come back to life. But this can take <minutes>. In the meantime your session is effectively hung. My MAC sitting right next to it on a different IP number (but into the same terminal server) via InterSLIP works flawlessly and never has these problems. If you use only connection-oriented things that close down their sockets (FTP, Mosaic, etc) it works fine. If you start using persistent services like Telnet for long periods you get screwed. I get screwed consistently by this on two different PC systems (different configs) and so have a number of people here. Again, the difference starts becoming pronounced at Alpha 18 and has not improved since. My configuration has also been posted - Windows 3.1, IBM Leopard DX3/60 board, 2xNS16550AFN serial ports, Microcom V.FC 28.8 modem, IDE disk and Orchid video. Clocking modems at 57600bps. At 38400 it is noticably better, but the problem is NOT gone. This points to some kind of overrun or buffering problem in the WinSOCK SLIP driver. The same connection via Ethernet to a Netblazer and in to our net via SLIP <NEVER> hangs up. Sure, I can take a $3000 piece of gear home from the office and run with that -- never to have another problem. And my customers? They're twisting in the breeze for want of a working package. I <KNOW> this is shareware, and I <KNOW> that this is not considered "commercial grade software" but frankly I am apalled if this passes for release quality (even V1.0). The MAC's "shareware" software is MUCH nicer and more stable; again, with my Powerbook I have two choices, InterSLIP or MAC/PPP, and BOTH are stable as a rock. Right now there is, IMHO, NO stable Shareware/Freeware Windows selection available with internal communications and dial scripting capability. And, until there is something I can test and prove out to be stable, I will continue to make this known. -- -- Karl Denninger (karl@MCS.COM) | MCSNet - Full Internet Connectivity (shell, Modem: [+1 312 248-0900] | PPP, SLIP and more) in Chicago and 'burbs. That statement is fine as long as you qualify it to state that the Trumpet Winsock is unstable on your test system.
